The Verdict
What survived the century's testing — suggestion and false memory, the adaptive unconscious, and the honest ledger.
A course on the thought of The Unconscious.
Psychology
What you will learn
- Define the 'creative illness' (Ellenberger) — a period of intense preoccupation and suffering that resolves into a transformation and a system — and give the two exemplars (Freud's self-analysis, Jung's confrontation).
- Explain why the hidden mind was in a real sense CO-AUTHORED by patients — overwhelmingly women, often uncredited — naming Anna O., Blanche Wittmann, and Marie and what each contributed.
- Connect both credits to the course's honesty method: the discovery was real, but the founders' authority (and gender/class position) shaped whose names history recorded — and, as the next module shows, could also shape what the patients produced.
- Name suggestion — the healer's expectation silently installed in the patient and read back as discovery — and trace it from the exorcist and the magnetic somnambule through Charcot's trained hysterics to the recovered-memory epidemic.
- State what the 1980s–90s recovered-memory disaster proved (Loftus et al.): suggestion under a believing authority can implant vivid, detailed, sincerely-held false memories — and state the bound Loftus gives in her own beat, that some recollective experience runs near 47% while full memories run near 15%, so the two figures answer different questions and neither speaks to an individual case.
- Draw the hard lesson: the technique at the core of the dynamic tradition (make the hidden thing manifest, trust what surfaces) can manufacture as well as uncover, and only controlled evidence from OUTSIDE the consulting room can distinguish the two.
- State the CORE claim modern science vindicated (most mental work happens outside awareness) and how the 'adaptive unconscious' differs from Freud's (fast, smart, adaptive vs a repressed-sexual cauldron).
- Sort the discoveries into survived / partial / fell (adaptive unconscious, dissociation, early relationships, therapy efficacy // motivated forgetting // universal Oedipus, the death drive, penis envy, inherited archetypes, the magnetic fluid, fixed hypnotic stages).
Course outline
- The Wounded Healers — Before the ledger, two credits the founders could not give themselves. First: several discovered by BREAKING DOWN. Freud's deepest work came out of the anguished self-analysis after his father's…
- The Ghost of Suggestion — One ghost haunts the whole history: SUGGESTION — the healer, believing his theory, unwittingly shapes the patient to confirm it. The exorcist's demon spoke the exorcist's creed; the magnetic…
- The Ledger — With suggestion accounted for, the honest ledger. The CORE claim survived and grew: modern cognitive science finds a vast *adaptive unconscious* doing most of the mind's work — the central discovery…
