Marcus Aurelius answers

The obstacle is the way — this is not a slogan. It is the precise description of how the rational faculty works when it works rightly. Here is what I mean. External things — other men, illness, reversal, the stubbornness of circumstance — can impede the body, can block a particular action, can frustrate a plan. But the mind converts and changes every hindrance to its activity into an aid; so that which is a hindrance is made a furtherance to an act, and that which is an obstacle on the road helps us on this road.1

This is not optimism. It is a claim about the structure of rational agency: the obstacle does not touch the faculty that chooses how to respond to it. That faculty is free to reframe, to redirect, to find in the very resistance the material for a different and perhaps better action. The ruling faculty, when self-collected, is satisfied with itself if it does nothing which it does not choose to do.2

Nothing can compel the assent. Fire, iron, tyrant, abuse — none of these touch the intelligence in any way; when it has been made a sphere, it continues a sphere.3 The obstacle reaches the body, reaches the plan, reaches the outcome — but the one thing it cannot reach is the seat of judgment. And judgment is where the work is done. Reason moves through opposition the way fire moves upward or a cylinder moves down an inclined surface: not despite the resistance but through it, by its own nature and constitution.4

The obstacle is the occasion for the exercise. Without it, there is no wrestling, no proof that the faculty holds. So: whatever stands in your way today, do not ask first how to remove it. Ask what the rational response to it is, what can be done or said in the way most conformable to reason.5 That question is always answerable. The obstacle never is.
